The PAL-V Liberty uses 2 certified Rotax 912 iSc Sport engines. These engines are standard fitted with steel oil reservoirs. Although the oil reservoirs are functioning very well, they are quite heavy. Weight is a crucial factor in the design of any aircraft, therefore PAL-V is looking for a student to determine the feasibility of, and design lightweight oil reservoirs. If successful, the design will be implemented into the production model of the PAL-V Liberty.

The project will start with a study on the steel reservoirs, to understand the workings. The reservoirs are not just simple containers but also provide means for anti-foaming, anti-sloshing, oil level indication and more. After study, a concept will have to be generated for a lighter equivalent, assisted by the PAL-V review team, that will go into detailed design after concept selection. Detailed design consists of making CAD drawings in SolidWorks, simulations, calculations and production drawings. The final stage of the project is ordering and testing of the new concept.

The student will be part of the Powerplant team and participate in all team meetings. Support for the student will come mainly from the Powerplant Team Lead, but the student can ask help from any PAL-V specialist. It is expected of the student to technically fill in this project, but also properly manage it, meaning arranging meetings with specialists, monitor progress and pro-actively flag any issues that arise, to assure timely reaction. PAL-V has an Agile working method, where tasks are planned, carried out and reviewed in 2-week sprints that conform to the company planning.
